They CAN , by Amy Stark

When you bring a baby home from the hospital, you have dreams. You have hopes for that baby. While you are sitting awake at 3 am feeding that baby for what seems like the 25th time that day…you imagine what your child will be doing at different ages. What will her first words be? Will her blonde curls still be there when she gets on the bus for the first time? Will she play soccer or softball? Will she be homecoming queen? Will it be Harvard or Northwestern?

But then one day, you will notice that something isn't quite right. She isn't talking like everyone else's kids. She doesn't look at people like everyone else's kids do. She doesn't "get" stuff like everyone else's kids . People will try and make excuses for it. "She's a girl….she is your second kid…..everyone is different " And then one day you will sit at a meeting and they will tell you what you suspected all along. Autism. So now, your imaginations change. Will she ever talk? Will her blonde curls survive riding the bus for an hour to a special classroom in Woodstock? Will she even understand the difference between soccer or softball? And as for homecoming queen or college…..those dreams just went "poof."

Our kids with special needs don't always get to do what everyone else does. Usually that is not a good thing. But one thing that our special kids do get to do is participate in the Charmers squad at Layton Athletics. This is a cheerleading squad made up of special needs children and coached by Kelley Layton. And something about putting on that uniform and going out and performing in front of hundreds of people is truly magical. They CAN do it. They CAN memorize lines of the cheer. They CAN do the stunts. They CAN. For these kids, and their parents, it is so beautiful. A place where we don't have to fight the system to get good things for our kids. A place where there are no judgments made…everyone has issues…we just deal with it. Most importantly it is a place where my daughter has made friends.

As a parent, I have also gained from being a part of the cheer team. I never would have met these amazing people had it not been for the Charmers squad. These moms and dads are champions for their children and are wise, kind, and patient beyond any parents I have ever met. I have so much to learn from them.

I also have learned something from my daughter. I must admit, I was leery of allowing her to be a cheerleader. Could she do it? Could she get it? Well, let me assure you…..she does get it and she can do it very well. She yells the cheer, her hair survives "the bow", she understands the difference between a stunt group and a tumble spot. As for homecoming queen and college………..just you wait and see.

What a wonderful summer! We hope everyone was able to enjoy lots of family and friend time. Even though the weather is still so beautiful, we all know the cold, dreary days of winter are not far away now. We also know that finding wide open *warm* spaces for children to run off that energy or to keep fit over the winter is not an easy thing to do!

The Huddle is back starting Friday September 17!!!

The Huddle is the place to meet up with friends for free open gym time at Layton Athletics . Bring the whole family and we will play some games, have a snack and strengthen old and build new friendships.

The Huddle begins at 6:30 pm and is currently scheduled for every other Friday. You just need to come dressed in comfortable clothes and be ready for action!!!

We are now a Special Olympics site!

Today we officially became a Special Olympics site for the Young Athletes program! WE ARE SO EXCITED!

From the Illinois Special Olympics website:

Special Olympics Illinois has started a new program called Young Athletes. Basically, the Young Athletes program is an innovative sports play program for children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities and their peers, designed to introduce them into the world of sports. This program will prove enormously beneficial on multiple levels for your child. First and foremost, these activities will help the children improve physically, cognitively and socially. It will also serve as an introduction to the world of Special Olympics while showing resources and support available within Special Olympics Illinois.

This program is designed to address two specific levels of play. Level 1 includes physical activities focused on developing fundamental motor tracking and eye-hand coordination. Level 2 concentrates on the application of these physical activities through a sports skills activity program and developing skills consistent with Special Olympics sports play.

We received all new play equipment from Special Olympics today and both Heather and Carol were trained in the program. We are so unbelievably psyched to get the Young Athletes program rolling as soon as possible! We were so impressed with how organized and supportive Jen from Special Olympics was - she made sure we have everything we need to provide this program for your kids. (THANK YOU JEN!)

Heather will be leading a class beginning in July so if you are interested in participating, please email us at: clublayton@gmail.com.

Special Speaker: Childhood Obesity and Practical Solutions

The problem of childhood obesity in the United States has grown considerably in recent years. Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. (From AACAP.org.)

This is a scary quote. And for those of us with differently-abled kids with various medical issues, healthy living isn't just a choice we can make or not make for our families, it's a necessity to insure that their physical health stays intact.

Dr. Laura Buthod will be visiting Club Layton for a special presentation followed by a Q & A period on Thursday, May 14th at 6:30 p.m. to talk about childhood obesity and practical solutions for families who want to make healthy choices for their kids. The gym will be open and staffed with our coaches so your kids can play while you attend the talk! Please RSVP by emailing clublayton@gmail.com.

We are dedicated to whole child health - happy minds and happy bodies. We love to encourage our Club Layton kids to eat healthy by offering fruits and vegetables as snacks rather than pizza and chips, water to drink instead of soda at our events and classes. =)

For more reading on this topic, I would highly recommend the online issues of Disability Solutions that include articles about obesity and healthy life choices. You can see the list of issues right here! I was especially encouraged by Jared's story, a young man with Down syndrome dealing with making choices for himself about weight management. You can read that right here!

World Down Syndrome Day!

Several of our Club Layton kids have Down syndrome and so we want to recognize that today is World Down Syndrome Day!

I wanted to share this video with you because I watched it again today and it had the same impact on me as it did the first time I saw it. This is a high school senior, speaking about how the R-word impacts him and his mentally handicapped sister. I just want to hug the daylights out of this guy. What an amazing statement to make by someone so young.

It's all about ABILITY.

It's an exciting thing, starting something new, and that's just what we're doing here. A group of people who saw a need and are trying to develop ways to meet that need. We want to create a place where everyone comes for physical fitness and social activities, where everyone has an opportunity to learn how to do things themselves, to the best of their ability.

Because we are all about focusing on ABILITY. Recognizing it and then celebrating it.

I recently read this article about benchmarks and goals over at Disability is Natural. In the article, Kathie Snow says the following:

The only fair benchmarks are the ones established by, and important to, the individual. The only fair comparison is to one’s self. Thus, a person is “here” (“current level of achievement” or whatever), with no comparison to others or a norm. We measure progress by what the person is doing today, as compared to what she was doing six days, six weeks, or six months ago, with no comparison to others or a norm. We ensure we’re focused on what the person can do and wants to do, not on what the person cannot do. Isn’t this common sense? Isn’t it the right thing to do?

I would answer this question with an emphatic YES! YES it is common sense and YES it is the right thing to do!

So what can your child do, today, right now? What does your child want to do?

We are so excited to work on those things together. We currently have a cheer team and have a soccer program and dance class in the works! Stay tuned here at the blog, check the calendar often and feel free to contact us with any thoughts or questions you may have.

Free Open Gym Night!

Layton Athletic is sponsoring a free Open Gym Friday March 19 starting at 5:00 for differently-abled children and their families!! Come play with friends you already know and be ready to meet and make NEW friends too!

This event it open to ALL ages. We will let everyone have free play, play a few structured games, have a snack and anyone who would like to can also make a craft!

Everyone had a blast at the last event!! What a great way to burn off some energy and calories and spend time with friends on these bleak early spring nights!

Would appreciate an RSVP, but not at all necessary.

Any questions? Feel free to call us at (815) 728-9700 or email clublayton@gmail.com. Also feel free to pass this on to anyone you feel may be interested in joining us!

Welcome!

Welcome to Club Layton! We are a organization dedicated to bringing opportunities to grow physically and mentally to differently-abled kids. We will be offering a variety of classes, workshops, social groups and other activities to help kids learn to develop a life long love of fitness, to give kids the skills they need to do things on their own to the best of their ability and to foster an environment of teamwork and inclusiveness.

Held at Layton Athletics, a gym in Ringwood, Illinois and owned by Kelley Layton, longtime supporter of programs developed with differently-abled kids in mind, we are so, SO excited to be able to have a home for these brand new programs!

Stay tuned as we announce the times and dates for all the programs. We have LOTS in store. =)
